Traditional Chinese Crafts

Children discover how traditional crafts in China were connected to storytelling, festivals, and everyday life. Through stories and pictures they are introduced to shadow puppetry (皮影戏), one of China’s oldest storytelling arts, and create their own simple puppets inspired by animals and folk tales. They also explore the tradition of fragrant sachets (香包), small handmade pouches filled with herbs and flowers, and design their own to take home. Along the way, children learn Chinese words connected to colors, materials, and shapes.

Summer Solar Terms (from the Twenty-Four Solar Terms)

The Twenty-Four Solar Terms were developed in ancient China to help people observe seasonal changes and live in harmony with nature. Children are introduced to the solar terms connected with summer and discover how people traditionally understood heat, rain, plants, and changing weather. Through stories, games, and outdoor observation they notice signs of summer in the natural world and learn about customs connected to the season. During a visit to the botanical garden, children observe flowers, insects, trees, and shadows and create summer fans and nature journals inspired by what they discover. Along the way, they learn Chinese vocabulary connected to weather, plants, and summer activities.

Chinese Poetry and Paintings for Children

Children are introduced to simple classical Chinese poems connected to summer, nature, moonlight, rivers, and friendship. Through storytelling and imagery they discover how poems can express feelings and paint vivid pictures using only a few characters. They listen to and recite short poetic lines rhythmically and explore how poets observed the natural world closely. Inspired by traditional Chinese landscape paintings, children experiment with Chinese painting techniques to create mountains, rivers, flowers, and summer scenes.

Traditional Chinese Architecture

At the China Garden, children discover the curved roofs, courtyards, bridges, and wooden structures of traditional Chinese buildings. Through stories and pictures they compare homes, temples, gardens, and village streets in China and Switzerland and notice how architecture reflects climate, materials, and daily life. They explore how gardens and buildings were designed to create harmony between people and nature and observe reflections, stones, water, and pathways within the garden space. During the day, children build houses and pavilions using cardboard, sticks, and natural materials. They also learn Chinese vocabulary connected to houses, directions, shapes, and materials.

Day 5: Friday 太极 Taiji and Balance

Children discover Taiji as a traditional Chinese practice that combines movement, balance, breathing, and concentration. Through stories and demonstrations they learn how Taiji was inspired by observing nature — flowing water, moving clouds, birds, and the balance between softness and strength. They are introduced to the idea of harmony and explore how slow and mindful movement can help people feel calm, focused, and connected to their surroundings. In the afternoon, children practice simple Taiji-inspired movements and partner exercises in a playful and age-appropriate way. Outdoor activities encourage balance, coordination, and awareness of movement and space, while creative activities inspired by the yin-yang symbol and patterns in nature conclude the week in a calm and reflective atmosphere.
