We have had two incredible weeks of Chinese summer camp. The days were filled with exciting activities, language and cultural exploration. On the first two days, the campers learned all about China and Chinese festival and even made some Chinese food. Then they went on to learn the lion dance and visited the Rietberg museum and the China garden and did their own Chinese paintings and calligraphy. Finally on the last day, the little campers learned some cool Taiji moves and played traditional Chinese outdoor games. The kids had the most amazing time making friends, trying new things, and learning Chinese and about China. Don’t forget to register for our fall camp (Deadline 15 September).

Starting time/Drop off: 9.10am at Zurich HB (Landesmuseum), 8.45am at Thalwil or Küsnacht Station

*CHF 15 per day for optional child care from 4.45pm to 6pm, additional 20 CHF per child above 6 years per week for public transportation

Day 1: Monday 7/14 August: Introducing of each other and our school mascot “Little Mandarin”. Some group games will be played together to learn the key words and phrases of the day. In the afternoon, “Little Mandarin” tells us all about China: The children will learn about some typical items and are important in the Chinese culture. They will then do a scavenger hunt in the Rechberg park to find those items.

Day 2: Tuesday 8/15 August: “Little Mandarin” will tell the children stories behind the most important Chinese festivals. They will learn about the food and customs of those festivals. In the afternoon, they will make a special festival related food.

Day 3: Wednesday 9/16 August: “Little Mandarin” and the children will learn some Chinese idioms and their stories related to lion. They will also make a lion head together and learn the lion dance!

Day 4: Thursday 10/17 August: “Little Mandarin” will first teach some techniques of Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting. The children will then practice some Chinese characters. In the afternoon, we will make an excursion to the China Garden where the children will find their motives, so that they will create their own Chinese painting at the end of the day.

Day 5: Friday 11/18 August: “Little Mandarin” will discover with the children what Taiji is. Its origin, clothing and etiquettes and famous masters. In the afternoon, the children will learn do some specific Taiji movements. Finally, we will end the day/week with some Chinese outdoor activities: shuttlecock, hopscotch, and tug-of-war.

Highlights of the LittleMandarin Chinese Summer Camp:

  • Each day is structured in such a way that your child will improve their skills in speaking, writing, reading and listening Chinese and get a better understanding of the Chinese culture.
  • The program is mostly conducted in Chinese. Your child will learn Chinese in an immersive environment. (For non-native speackers, our teachers also understand and will conduct story telling in German/English.)
  • Meeting friends who are also learning and speaking Chinese and who your child can meet again after the camp
  • Lunch and afternoon snack included; your child only need to bring a morning snack.
  • Drop off & pick up at 3 locations: Thalwil/Küsnacht or Zurich HB (Landesmuseum)
  • *Pick up time possible until 6pm (service depends on the number of children) or at 4.45pm at the drop-off location
  • Your child can either participate the whole week or you can choose two (consecutive) days
